Toric

Astigmatism and Toric Lens Implants

Toric Intraocular Lenses (IOL) are designed to help correct astigmatism in patients who also have a cataract and are considering cataract surgery. Often astigmatism effects visual acuity causing blurred or impaired vision if it becomes moderate to severe even before the patient develops cataracts. The blurred vision is caused as a result of the eye’s cornea having an irregular shape. A normal eye’s cornea and lens have a circular shape, but an eye with astigmatism has a longer, more oval shape.

Most astigmatism is not severe enough to require a special surgery and can be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses. But for patients with a pre-existing astigmatism considering cataract surgery, a Toric IOL could be the solution to help eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.
