Macular Degeneration

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular DegenerationAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease associated with aging. It has the ability to gradually destroy central vision. Central vision is needed to see objects clearly, and is used for common every day tasks like reading and driving.

In some patients, drusen, or tiny dot-like deposits can appear beneath the macula. While these deposits are not directly responsible for vision loss, it can indicate that the patient may be at risk for developing problems with the macula. There are two types of Macular Degeneration: wet, and dry. Dry AMD can appear when thin areas develop in the macula, leading to vision loss. Some patients experience abnormal blood vessels under the macula, which creates the “wet” form of macular degeneration. If these vessels are identified at an early stage it may be possible to seal them with a laser treatment, so the patient will not experience any visual changes.

There is no pain associated with AMD, but it will affect your vision. Patients suffering from Dry AMD will notice blurred vision, and Wet AMD patients will notice that straight lines appear crooked.

If you are noticing any changes in your vision it is important that you contact Dr. Stephenson to schedule a comprehensive eye examination.

I am at risk for Macular Degeneration?

People over the age of 60 are at a greater risk than any other age group to develop AMD. Other risk factors that may increase your chances include:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity – studies show there may be a link between the progression of AMD, and obesity
  • Family history – if your immediate family members suffer from AMD, it increases your chance of also suffering from AMD
  • Gender – studies show that women tend to be at greater risk than men
